It was only a matter of time before the beautiful people got Hugh Laurie. He's always been lovely looking in a rumpled, easygoing kind of way. But he morphed so easily from the foppish Bertie Wooster to acerbic physician Dr House that I suspect there must have always been a smoothie clammering to escape.
And it looks like that has now happened, for Laurie is L'Oreal's new poster boy - he is the face of L'Oreal Vita Lift 5, a mini skincare line for men that erases tired lines - and the promotional pictures of him are so strokeable and shiny he looks like he might squeak.
Actually when I first saw them I mistook Laurie for a slimmed down George Clooney, buff-booted feet splayed and every last hair gelled to attention while ponderously eye-balling the camera. Laurie's tousled loveableness has been styled and airbrushed into oblivion in that familiar, disappointing way when companies inexplicably try to improve on what is already perfect. Then I YouTubed the advert and was charmed right back round again by Laurie's midlife talk: how should he deal with this stage - by writing his lifestory/going on a diet/having surgery? All this is pondered in a most Laurie-like way, with that unmistakable tongue-in-cheek humour.
